Pte 24432, George Worthington, enlisted in 1915 and joined the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, known as 'The Bantams'. George's story is quite sad, as he returned home on shore leave in 1917 during which time his mother died, just after his neice (my gran) was born, and is said to have told his sister that as his mum was dead and after he went back he wouldn't be coming home, because he didn't have anything to come home to. He was a batchelor. According to sources he volunteered to go out on a rekkie but never returned. He is listed as being killed in action on 28 March 1918 and is named on the remembrance wall at Pozieres cemetary. Regrettably his body was never found.
I visited Pozieres and George on one of my visits to France and it was a very moving experience.
An extract of the Battalion's movements can be found HERE. From the information obtained, it is probable that George was killed or wounded between 21st and 26th March 1918 during the battle of the Kaiserschlact. I'm hoping that once more information becomes available online, I may be able to find a copy of George's Service Records.
